News article published on: 11th May 2019

Like us you still may have your fingers crossed for an Indian summer, however early indications are that we are hurtling along at full pace towards Autumn.  If you cycle regularly, you will know that your requirements will change season by season. With this in mind, we’ve put together an essential guide to autumn cycling that will prepare you for the season ahead. Read on to discover hints and tips that will see you right through until October.

Be Rain Ready

Crisp mornings and unpredictable downpours shouldn’t put a dampener on your cycling experience. A few tweaks to your work out wardrobe are all you will need to prepare for the autumn weather. Staying warm on cooler mornings is simple when you add a few layers. Wearing lots of thin layers ensures that you keep the cold at bay without bulky clothing weighing you down. Start with a thin base layer and build up your ensemble with long sleeved tops and finish it all off with a lightweight waterproof layer.

Light Up

If you haven’t already, it’s time to invest in front and rear lights for your bike. As the darker nights draw in, it is essential that you are visible to other road users. So whether you commute to and from work or you enjoy early evening bike rides, make sure your front and rear lights are in full working order. It is not only your bike that needs to be seen when you are on the road after dark. Investing in a few reflective pieces of kit such as hi-vis cuffs or a hi-vis belt is a wise idea.

Upgrade your Kit

A new season requires a few new accessories and there are plenty of ways to make sure you are prepared for the unpredictable British weather.  A waterproof bag cover will ensure your packed lunch stays dry while a head warmer will help you to keep in as much body heat as possible when the temperatures drop. Don’t forget to upgrade your bike with a decent set of mudguards.

A Seasonal Service

As the days get shorter, there is no better time to give your bike a once over. Don’t wait until winter, send your bike for a service or if you know it is in great working order, there are a few things you can do at home. Give it a clean and check that there is plenty of life left in the brakes.

So there you have it, your essential guide to autumn cycling to keep you on the road whatever the weather. Happy Cycling!
