Car involved in cyclist hit-and-run was being followed by police

News article published on: 20th June 2013

A car involved in what looks to be a hit-and-run accident with a couple on a tandem bicycle was being followed by police recent reports have said.

The accident occurred in Hanham, near Bristol on Sunday 27th January 2013.

The couple, Ross and Clare Simons who were travelling on a tandem bicycle were both tragically killed at the scene of the accident.

Police have arrested a man and woman on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Stuart Kightley, serious injury lawyer at Osbornes comments:

“Four weeks into 2013 and we are already hearing reports of cycling fatalities on our roads. Last year the number of cyclists who were killed in Britain hit a five year high with 122 fatalities.  As a nation we were all gripped with Olympic fever last year and the cycling is the sport that has really captured people’s imagination with more and more of us of all ages taking up the sport.  There has been a great deal of discussion about what legacy London 2012 will leave and it would be a great shame and not to mention incredibly sad if the rise in cycling fatalities on our roads became a negative part of this legacy”.

A sobering fact released by The Times in one of their “Cities fit for cycling”campaign reports, which Osbornes solicitors supports, is that in 2012 the number of cyclists killed in Britain outnumbered British soldiers killed in Afghanistan by more than two to one.

Safety tips from TfL

  1. There are blind spots all around large vehicles. It’s often safer to hang back
  2. Making eye contact with drivers confirms that they have seen you
  3. During the day wear bright clothing and at night wear reflective clothing
  4. Use lights after dark – white at front and red at rear
  5. Make hand signals when turning left or right
  6. Consider wearing a helmet
  7. If the road is too narrow for vehicles to pass you safely, it may be safer to ride towards the middle of the lane to prevent dangerous overtaking by other vehicles
  8. When riding past parked cars allow at least a full door’s width between you in case a car door opens suddenly
  9. Use the advanced stop line for cyclists, if there is one when waiting for the traffic lights to change
  10. Don’t ride through red traffic lights

If you are involved in a cycling accident

If you ever are involved in a cycling accident if possible:

  • Take picture at the scene of your injuries and the damage to your bike
  • Always get the details of the other vehicle user involved in the accident
  • Take down details of any witnesses. This may become crucial when trying to prove who was at fault
  • Even if you feel fine it is always worth going to hospital for a check-up. This is especially true if you have suffered a head injury.
