Breast Implant Compensation

By far the most popular procedure is implanted breast enlargement. Of the 35,000 female cosmetic surgery procedures reported by the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS really is their acronym) in 2010, 30% were breast augmentation procedures. About 15% were eyelid treatment and slightly smaller proportions accounted for breast reductions, face and neck lifts, tummy tucks and liposuction.

For men, the numbers were much smaller (4000 procedures in 2010), but growing.

Breast Enlargement Surgery

This is invasive surgical treatment, requiring general anaesthetic and the insertion of a silicone implant. Surgical complications include bleeding and infection. Later issues can occasionally include capsular contracture, whereby the body’s immune response produces collagen fibres that may shrink and squeeze the implant causing a visible and uncomfortable distortion and requiring removal and replacement of the implant, or rupture of the implant. Imperfectly performed surgery can produce asymmetrical breasts, desensitised or over sensitised nipples and obvious, lumpy and uncomfortable scarring.

Breast reduction

This is relatively complicated surgery to remove fatty deposits and skin to reduce the overall size and weight of the breasts. The motivation for surgery may be aesthetic but is often also physical, from back, neck and shoulder pain. The procedure involves cutting and excising breast tissue and skin and repositioning the nipple in a reconstructed breast. There will be significant scarring and there is a risk of fat necrosis (death of tissue that loses blood supply), altered appearance or sensation in the nipple and lumpiness in the tissues of the breast. These problems should all settle over time, but if the operation has been performed with a lack of proper skill and care the effect may be difficult to reverse and further surgery may be necessary.

How we can help

If you have undergone a treatment which did not leave you with the desired results and which you believe was carried out incorrectly contact us to speak to a member of our personal injury team who will speak to you in more detail about all aspects of your breast implant claim and let you know what documents you may need to provide to move forward in your breast implant compensation claim, should you decide to proceed. Be assured that all information you provide us will remain confidential.
