Independent Review Identifies Harm to Children by Paediatric Surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital
An independent review by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has identified nine children who were harmed by a senior paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The review focused on complex hip surgeries performed over the past two and a half years, revealing that the care provided fell “below expected standards” on multiple occasions. Concerns were raised by both parents and colleagues at the hospital, with reports of serious complications including nerve damage and the need for corrective surgeries.
The surgeon involved, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, has been suspended from practice at Addenbrooke’s while NHS England conducts a broader review into the allegations of substandard care. Ronald Sinker, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Hospitals, has assured the public that the Trust is committed to transparency and has urged any families who believe their children may have received inadequate care to come forward via the Trust’s dedicated helpline.
