Overview
Osbornes Law recently secured a multi-million pound settlement for Maya Meron, an internationally acclaimed violist whose music career was ended by a Pilates reformer machine that collapsed at a Hampstead fitness studio in 2019.
The accident at Heartcore Studio
On 11 March 2019, Maya was using a Pilates reformer at Heartcore Studio in Hampstead when a bar on the machine became unlocked, causing her to fall with force. She fractured her left elbow and sustained serious abdominal injuries, including torn nerves that were not discovered until later.
Career-ending injuries
Before the accident, Maya had performed internationally as an orchestral violist with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, and at the BBC Proms. The elbow injury caused permanent nerve damage that ended her playing career.
She has since undergone multiple surgeries, including a third elbow operation in early 2025, and has attended approximately 400 medical appointments.
The full extent of her injuries was not immediately apparent. The torn abdominal nerve damage was only identified after months of investigation, complicating both her medical treatment and the legal valuation of her claim. Specialist orthopaedic, neurological and musical performance experts were required to evidence the impact on her career.
Liability admitted at mediation
The studio initially denied any fault. Following a formal mediation in November 2023, liability was agreed on an 85:15 basis in Maya’s favour, with the studio accepting responsibility for the unsafe condition of the equipment.
Interim payment and final settlement
The High Court approved an interim payment of £250,000 to support Maya’s immediate care, rehabilitation and lost earnings while quantum continued to be litigated.
The case progressed through several further years of litigation in the High Court. The studio’s insurers contested the extent of Maya’s injuries and the value of her career losses, requiring expert evidence on the orchestral employment market and the financial impact of an ended performance career. After seven years of legal proceedings, the case settled in 2026 for a confidential multi-million pound figure.
Life after the accident
Maya has since relocated to Indiana with her children, where she teaches string instruments using methods adapted to her injuries. She is also working with the MIT Assistive Technology Lab on a robotic walking aid to support her ongoing mobility difficulties.
Press coverage
Maya’s case has been reported internationally, including by Slippedisc, The Strad and Ynet News.
