A piece of Italian cycling history brought back to life

Displayed in the window of our Hampstead office, this beautifully restored 1979 Alan Super Record road bike is more than a remarkable example of Italian cycling craftsmanship. It’s also an opportunity to support a good cause.
Lovingly restored to its former glory, a 1979 Alan Super Record road bike is a remarkable example of Italian cycling craftsmanship.
Built in 1979, the Alan Super Record represents an important chapter in the evolution of road cycling. In the early 1970s, Italian manufacturer Alan pioneered the use of lightweight aluminium frames, moving away from the traditional steel construction that had dominated professional cycling for decades.
Using Ergal, an aerospace-grade aluminium alloy, Alan produced frames that were both lightweight and innovative. The company’s bikes went on to achieve more than 20 world championship titles across road racing and cyclocross, cementing their place in cycling history.
This particular 1979 Super Record was originally purchased by cycling enthusiast Nick Finley almost 35 years ago. Over the years, it accompanied him on his daily commute along London’s Euston Road, weekend rides through Derbyshire, journeys along the winding roads of Brittany and climbs in the Pyrenees.
Now, thanks to the painstaking work of vintage cycling enthusiast Jeremy Antscherl, the bike has been restored to its original top-of-the-range specification.
The restoration includes a Campagnolo Super Record groupset, considered among the finest cycling components of its era and used by many of the world’s leading professional riders. Other period details include Cinelli handlebars and stem, a Selle Italia Turbo saddle and Mavic GP4 tubular rims.
The result is a beautiful example of late-1970s Italian bicycle design, combining engineering innovation with the elegance and craftsmanship for which the country’s cycling industry became famous.
The restoration is so faithful to the period that the bike meets the historic criteria for participation in Eroica cycling events, which celebrate the heritage and traditions of classic road cycling in Italy and around the world.
More than four decades after it was first built, this Alan Super Record is ready for the next chapter in its remarkable story.
Following our original cycling fundraiser, during which Osbornes Law donated £2,000 to charity and acquired the bike, we’re now looking for a new owner. By selling the bike, we hope to raise further funds for charity and give this piece of cycling history a new chapter.
You can read more about the original fundraiser in our cycling fundraiser article.
