Ms Kuldeep Stohr, orthopaedic surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital suspended
In February 2025, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) confirmed that a review had identified sub-standard treatment in relation to nine paediatric patients. The surgeon involved was subsequently suspended.
Following an initial period of anonymity, it was confirmed that the surgeon under investigation was Ms Kuldeep Stohr. CUH also announced a broader, independent review of 800 patients, to be led by Andrew Kennedy KC and conducted by a panel of clinicians. It later emerged that concerns had first been raised as early as 2015, triggering a report in 2016.
What the 2015–16 review found
In May 2025, a media investigation disclosed new information about that earlier review. It had been conducted externally and examined the treatment of several of Ms Stohr’s patients. Key findings included:
While the report stated there were no overarching concerns about Ms Stohr’s practice, it did highlight “technical issues” in multiple surgical procedures.
Some cases were described as particularly complex, and decision-making was often appropriate. However, the paediatric department was criticised for being “divided”, failing to discuss difficult cases, and lacking “mutual support”.
It also found that Ms Stohr failed to order CT scans after surgery, despite clinical guidance that all cases of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (where surgery is required) should be followed by post-operative MRI or CT imaging.
A repeat of past concerns
It is deeply troubling that the 2025 review has echoed many of the same concerns raised nearly a decade earlier. Once again, issues were found relating to post-operative imaging, technical difficulties in hip surgery, and Ms Stohr’s tendency to operate without the support of colleagues.
