El NHS tiene las listas de espera más largas de la historia

Las listas de espera del NHS de Inglaterra han alcanzado la cifra más alta desde 2007 y han llegado al número récord de 7,47 millones de personas esperando para comenzar tratamientos rutinarios en el hospital, casi 400 000 personas tienen que esperar más de un año. Aunque era de esperar tras una pandemia y la escasez de personal por tanto tiempo, esta noticia llega a la vez que los médicos en formación inician su huelga salarial y el periodo de huelga más largo de la historia del NHS.

Muchas personas que necesitan una operación han estado en lista de espera más de un año, algunas llevan esperando tres años para operaciones ortopédicas rutinarias. También hay más de 300 000 personas con problemas del corazón y casi la mitad de estos pacientes han estado esperando casi cinco meses para someterse a procedimientos como análisis, TAC o trasplantes y estents. La British Heart Foundation ha señalado que las largas listas de espera ponen en riesgo a aquellos que están esperando a ser intervenidos, ya que, tristemente, ha habido un exceso de miles de muertes por enfermedades del corazón desde que comenzó la pandemia y piensan que las listas de espera para los tratamientos del corazón contribuyen a ello.

También se han visto afectadas aquellas personas que esperan el diagnóstico de un cáncer, lo que retrasa el comienzo de su tratamiento y, por lo tanto, reduce las posibilidades de supervivencia. Los expertos en datos del NHS descubrieron que podría haber 25 000 personas con cáncer en las listas de espera.

Más de un tercio de los pacientes en listas de espera son niños que necesitan diversos tratamientos, desde tratamientos dentales a pruebas por diferentes problemas respiratorios. Mientras los niños esperan a ser tratados y atendidos, cada día tienen que convivir con los síntomas de su enfermedad, lo que puede afectar a su educación. Por eso, muchos niños faltan al colegio.

Muchos pacientes renuncian a estas largas listas de espera, algunos optan por acudir a la sanidad privada y otros, desgraciadamente, aprenden a vivir con sus enfermedades y dolencias. El Gobierno de Reino Unido ha prometido eliminar todas las listas de espera de más de un año para marzo del 2025.
