Adoption documentary screened on BBC1 17 Jun 2011

The Truth About Adoption, a panorama documentary is to be screened on BBC1 on Wednesday 14th December.

The documentray follows six children and their foster parents as they wait to find new permanent homes.

The documentary is billed as lifting the lid on adoption breakdown, one aspect of the system that is rarely discussed. Academic evidence suggests that one in five adoptions breaks down, rising to as many as 40 percent with older children.

The programmes follows three siblings whose adoption breakdowns after three years of living with the prospective family. In another case prospective adopters give up on 5 year old Connor after two weeks. Returned to his long-term foster family, who apply to adopt him themselves, his birth mother stalls the process even though she has not seen Connor for years.

The third case focuses on two sisters who look to be on their way to finally be adopted. In the past two years 16 families have been considered but none chosen.

Their foster carer, Di, who has decades of experience in looking after children voices her frustration at the system which in her opinion “claims to be operating in the best interests of the children, but whose lack of urgency, cumbersome assessment and decision-making process is actually harming them”.
