A serious motorbike accident can change the course of a young person’s working life. When complex orthopaedic injuries leave someone in lasting pain and facing more surgery, the compensation has to look decades ahead, not just at the bills already paid.

Our personal injury team secured £1.1 million for a young motorcyclist who was left with life-changing orthopaedic injuries after a road accident. The claim settled in 2024.

This case study explains what happened, how we proved the long-term impact of the injuries, and why a claim like this is about future earning capacity as much as the injury itself.

What happened

Our client was 21 years old when the accident happened on 8 December 2020. He was riding his motorbike when he was involved in a collision.

The crash caused multiple orthopaedic injuries, meaning serious damage to his bones and joints. The driver initially disputed responsibility, so liability had to be fought rather than simply accepted.

The injuries our client suffered

Our client needed several reconstructive operations to repair the damage. Despite extensive rehabilitation, he was left with significant ongoing pain and discomfort.

He also developed ongoing psychological symptoms, which is common after a sudden, traumatic accident at a young age. Medical evidence confirmed that he would continue to suffer a severe impairment in his mobility, and that further surgery in the future is inevitable.

Why this was a high-value claim

On the face of it, this was a case without amputation or paralysis. The value came from the lasting effect on a young person at the very start of his working life.

The medical evidence confirmed that our client met the definition of “disabled” under the Equality Act 2010. In claims like this, that matters because it shows the injury has a substantial, long-term effect on everyday activities.

It also meant our client was significantly disadvantaged on the open labour market. In plain terms, his injuries make it harder for him to compete for jobs and to stay in work over a lifetime, so the claim included a sum to reflect that reduced earning capacity.

How we resolved the claim

We issued High Court proceedings to put pressure on the defendant and move the case forward. Building the claim meant gathering detailed medical evidence on his injuries, his prognosis and the likelihood of further surgery.

The case settled by agreement for a gross sum of £1.1 million. A result at this level reflects both the seriousness of the injuries and their effect on our client’s future earnings and quality of life.

This claim was led by Kate Milton, a senior associate in our personal injury team who specialises in serious, high-value injury claims.

What this case shows

You do not need to have lost a limb for a motorbike accident claim to be worth a substantial sum. Orthopaedic injuries that cause lasting pain, reduced mobility and a poorer position in the job market can support a high-value claim, particularly for younger claimants.

Disputed liability is also not a reason to give up. If you have suffered serious injuries in a road accident, early specialist advice helps gather the right evidence and secure interim payments to fund treatment while the claim continues.
