What can we learn from Race Across the World about having a ‘good’ divorce?
Race Across the World is (in my opinion) one of the best shows on TV. The combination of the beautiful scenery, the likeably personalities and the tension means that I am forced to switch off (something I confess I’m not very good at!) This season, however, has been slightly different and has left me thinking about work whilst watching TV, given that one of the couples facing the challenge are a divorced couple who are now the best of friends.
A powerful example
As a family lawyer, I spend most of my time helping couples untangle their lives when things fall apart. Sadly, this often leaves people feeling hurt, defensive and overwhelmed. Watching Gaz and Yin on Race Across the World Series 5, reminded me that divorce doesn’t always have to be about conflict and sometimes, even when a relationship changes course, it doesn’t have to end in bitterness, but can be the start of something healthier and more constructive.
Gaz and Yin’s journey as a divorced couple was fascinating and inspiring in equal measure. They showed that love and respect don’t have to disappear just because the romantic bond has. Their open communication and genuine care for each other is exactly what leads to healthy and amicable divorces.
What stood out most was their ability to work as a team even after their romantic relationship had ended. We often tell clients: you may no longer be married, but if you share children, assets, or simply a shared history, you’re still connected. It was clear that Gaz and Yin’s relationship may not have always been that way, but they have managed to reach a place where they are truly the best of friends. They treat each other with dignity, communicate openly and recognise that whilst their relationship has changed, it doesn’t mean that they have to hate each other.
Tips from a family lawyer
If you are thinking about getting divorced, and want to do everything you can to try and avoid things getting nasty, here are some helpful tips:
1. Consider Mediation. Mediation is a great way to reach an agreement swiftly by creating a collaborative atmosphere. If you are trying to agree on child arrangements, you can also consider child-inclusive mediation.
2. Choose your lawyer wisely. Most firms offer an introductory call, so you can ensure you instruct a solicitor who understands you and with whom you feel comfortable.
3. Don’t forget about your children. Children and finances are dealt with separately, but even when dealing with financial matters, it’s important to ensure that your relationship with the children is not harmed in the crossfire. When there is tension in the house, children are the first to pick up on it.
4. Protect your own mental health. Consider whether therapy might help you come to terms with the breakdown of your marriage. You could also explore family therapy if your children are at a suitable age.
Divorce doesn’t have to be a battle. As Gaz and Yin showed, it can be a new kind of partnership; one based on mutual respect, clarity, and compassion.
