Hugh Johnson is a Partner and Head of Medical Negligence Department.

Recognised as a leading partner in the field, Hugh acts only for Claimants who have been injured as a result of failures in medical treatment.

Hugh primarily represents claimants with life-changing brain and spinal injuries, who have received substandard care in a diverse range of NHS or private health settings. His work includes claims against GPs, hospitals and community health services such as physiotherapy and mental health services. He acts for clients who have sustained injury whether through active treatment such as surgery or through none at all, such as delay or misdiagnosis.
Hugh’s clients frequently have complex care needs which, in turn, give rise to urgent accommodation and rehabilitation needs. He is regularly involved with the co-ordination of specialist teams of therapeutic (treating) experts alongside the medicolegal experts to achieve the best outcomes for his clients.

A specialist medical negligence lawyer with 20 years’ experience, Hugh has recovered more than £65 million in damages for his clients in that time, supporting them with their current and future needs.

Hugh is accredited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) as a Senior Litigator. He is ranked in the major legal directories, Chambers and Partners and the Legal 500 as a leading partner and specialist in the field of medical negligence law.

Hugh is a regular conference speaker to both medical and legal audiences and has written widely on medical negligence topics. Publications include the Journal of Personal Injury Law (JPIL) and as co-author of the practitioner text Lewis & Buchan on Clinical Negligence (8th Ed). He has commented on the reform of the medical claims process and in response to government consultations.

Hailing from a family of healthcare professionals, Hugh has been exposed to the practice of medicine throughout much of his personal and professional life.

When a change of scene is necessary, Hugh is a club cyclist and has participated in a number of cycling and other sports events, supporting the Spinal Injuries Association and Back Up spinal charities.
