Naomi Angell talks Adoption Reform to the Law Gazette
News article published on: 20th June 2012
Adoption lawyers have come out in support of the prime minister’s announcement that new legislation will speed up the adoption process in the UK.
However, they have cautioned that changes could lead to increased legal challenges. An new action plan drawn up by the government will require local authorities to find adoptive parents within three months, or to place children on the national register.
Naomi Angell, a consultant at Osbornes Solicitors is one of the UK’s leadingadoption lawyers and the co-chair of the Law Society’s family law committee, welcomed the announcement as a positive step in the right direction in placing more children in care with adoptive families.
Naomi commented in the law gazette:
“The whole process, which can take two years to complete needs to improve. But the proposals could increase the number of legal challenges where local authorities do not follow guidelines on ethnicity or where concurrent planning leads birth parents to believe that the court proceedings were weighted from the outset in favour of adoption”
