MP campaigns for cycling road traffic accident bill
News article published on: 20th June 2012
Cyclists who cause death or serious injury through dangerous driving could soon be charged with a road traffic accident offence.
Andrea Leadsom, the Conservative MP who has introduced the bill says that she has received hundreds of e-mails and letters from people across the country complaining about accidents caused by cyclists on pavements, especially to children and elderly people.
According to the MP, a common complaint is that following an accident, victims are unable to identify cyclists and as such, there is a lack of accountability when an accident does occur.
In contradiction, however, a 2009 study claimed that only a small number of accidents involving cyclists are caused by the riders.
