More than Lycra: The Pick of Cycling Fashion
News article published on: 11th May 2019
In days gone by, clothing for the style-conscious cyclist was few and far between. Thankfully these days, cycling wear doesn’t have to be all about hi-vis and Lycra. With more and more designers realising the pressing need for both function and form, today’s cyclists have so much more to choose from. Here are some of our cycling fashion favourites.
Vulpine Waterproof Utility Jacket – £229
The clever bods at Vulpine design all of their cycling clothes for the ’ride and destination’. That means they want them to do a great job on the bike, then look good by the time you’ve got where you’re going. To this end, they’ve spent a ludicrously long time designing their waterproof utility jacket. It’s fully waterproof (no surprises there), but also breathable so you won’t arrive a sweaty mess. Add in taped seams, internal elasticated cuffs and a smart tailored design for both men and women and they’re on to a winner.
Ted Baker Ohpant Chinos – £95
One of the few established designers to get in on the cycling game, Ted Baker has an entire collection of cycling-inspired gear called ‘Raising the Handlebars’. It features a host of products, from ventilated shirts to stylish bags, all aimed at the fashion-conscious commuter. The chinos are particularly classy, providing the kind of tailoring you would expect from Ted Baker, with the added bonus of reflective strips on the back pockets and hiding under the turn-ups. It’s finished in an antibacterial coating too. Our only gripe is that there’s no women’s range.
The Bicycle Wrap Skirt – pre-order for around £55
This ingenious skirt has been specially designed to stop the dreaded fly-up when cycling, which it achieves by way of hidden fasteners underneath the bottom hem. It’s also got two removable fabric straps to stop it from flapping into your back tyre or getting snagged in the brakes. There’s a hidden pocket in amongst all that fabric, and it comes with a removable fabric pouch for all the rest of your gubbins.
Worn high on the waist, it has a classic vintage look to it, fits most sizes and even comes in a tall or a plus-size option. Made from a linen/cotton blend, it’s the perfect mix of comfort, style and practicality.
Rapha Cutter’s Shirt – £95
Anything by British cycling-wear company, Rapha, generally gets the seal of approval, and their cutter’s shirt is no exception. Made from a high-stretch, quick-drying fabric, it’s comfortable enough to withstand your ride into work and leave you looking great by the time you walk through the door. Cleverly designed shoulder seams allow you to comfortably wear a messenger bag over the top, and a French-style collar lets you stick a tie on for those important business meetings. It’s semi-tailored and slim-fitting for a modern look, and available in three different colours for the truly fussy.
So what are you waiting for? Saddle up and let the road (or the trail) be your catwalk!
