Inquest into Croydon tram crash adjourned due to COVID

News article published on: 16th October 2020

The Senior Coroner for South London, Sarah Ormond-Walsh has adjourned the Croydon Tram Inquests, which were due to start on Monday 19 October.

Coroner Sarah Ormond-Walshe said there was insufficient safe-distancing space in the council chamber to accommodate the jury and legal teams.

Ben Posford, partner and head of catastrophic injury at Osbornes Law is lead solicitor for five of the seven families (the families of Mr Logan, Mr Seary, Ms Rynkiewicz, Mr Smith, and Mr Collett). He says: “The families are very disappointed by the adjournment, having been preparing for the start of the inquests for a long time. However, they accept the difficult decision that the senior coroner has had to make in light of the Covid crisis, and hope that the inquests can get underway soon.”

Of the 70 people on board the tram at the time of the crash, seven died and 62 were injured, 19 seriously. The seven people who died are: Dane Chinnery, 19, Philip Logan, 52, Philip Seary, 57, Dorota Rynkiewicz, 35, and Robert Huxley, 63, all from New Addington, and Mark Smith, 35, and Donald Collett, 62, from Croydon.
