Alarming child abuse figures released by NSPCC

News article published on: 20th June 2012

Figures obtained by the NSPCC show that 23,000 children were victims of sex offences in England and Wales during 2010/11 – more than a fifth of the children represented in this number were too young for secondary school.

The statistics released by the police to the NSPCC revealed that more than a third of all sex crimes are committed against children.

The figures also revealed that more than 60 child sex offences were reported every day with a child being sexually attacked every 20 minutes last year.

Jon Brown who heads up the NSPCC’s sexual abuse programme said that: ” a concentrated effort has to be made if we are to start reducing this distressing level of offences, many of which are committed on extremely young and helpless children. When you have a situation where more than 60 children are being sexually abused each day, something is very wrong”

The Government responded to the figures saying: “the Government is determined to protect children from sexual abuse and will continue to work across departments, law enforcements, agencies and charities in order to do so”.
