Naomi Angell, specialist adoption lawyer in Osbsornes Solicitors, family law department London, spoke at a training workshop for immigration lawyers on family law aspects of intercountry adoption law, organised by the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA).
Many international adoption cases involve immigration law issues and it is therefore important that immigration lawyers understand and are alert to the family law aspects of a case.
Issues can arise in cases such as:
- Where an ex-pat who has adopted a child while living and working abroad wishes to bring their adopted child back to this country to obtain recognition of their foreign adoption here and for their child to be granted British citizenship.
- Where a British step-father has a foreign wife who has a child by a previous relationship. The family have decided is to settle in this country and the step father wishes to adopt his step-child and for the child to obtain British nationality.
- a childless family living in England have most of their family abroad. The English couple go on a family visit when they hear of a baby available for adoption. The adoption is completed during the visit and they then wish to bring the baby back to their home in England, obtain recognition of the foreign adoption here and secure immigration status for their child.
In all these cases, our adoption team work closely with immigration lawyers as this is vitally important in seeking the best outcome for our clients. In her regular training activities with ILPA Naomi is committed to promoting and encouraging informed and effective co -working between family and immigration lawyers on often very complex and sensitive cases.
